So a friend of mine posted an idea of having 3-year renewable marriage contracts. What does that phrase even suggest? The idea is absurdly short-sighted and ridiculous. It's like asking for male-pattern baldness; no thank you. There's even talk these days of getting prenuptial agreements upon the very act of entering into the bonds of holy matrimony. This kind of talk does little to strengthen the family, the thread which makes up the fabric of our society. Weak talk begets poor investment.

Tom and I talked briefly about prenups, but we realized, were we to split up, that we'd have no money to give the other one anyway.
I know.....it's horrible......it's like saying i know this will happen anyways so let's split our assets before we even tie the knot.....WTF!!!!
In this day and age of lotteries and jackpots, prenups are actually a pretty good idea. Recognizing that there are a lot of people out there who are money grubbers (male and female), it protects the hard efforts of both (or one) spouses. Why most women hate the concept is beyond me but the bottom line is that it puts both parties on an equal footing. If drafted properly, it says we're committed to working on the marriage but if something happens, we both walk away clean - no fights, no nasty divorces, no huge lawyer fees - we walk away clean. If there are kids involved, then most prenups plan for that, too.
Those sort of arrangements are for people who get married for the tax benefits, not because they want to be with a specific person. And if they're looking for an escape plan then they aren't commited to working on the marriage for the long haul.
"Any two people can have a succesful marriage if both parties are willing to work at it."
